Danish delights

It’s been a while since my last update, and I so wish I had the time to wax lyrical about my 7.5 weeks in Denmark, researching the new Lonely Planet guide. Alas, with deadlines looming and another trip north to plan for (Iceland in July-August), there is not the time to do it justice. So instead, a few snippets and a few photos…

Highlights of 52 days and 4000km in my hire car: a week of Eurovision (with a press pass – score!), lots of hygge (that special brand of Danish cosiness), too many pastries, gloriously unseasonal sunshine and springtime blossoms, lots of islands and lakes, New Nordic cuisine plus bumper traditional pork-and-potato dishes, photogenic castles, a whole lot of design inspiration and too many hours distracted by homewares and furniture shops, smørrebrød (open sandwiches: things of culinary beauty), inspired modern architecture, stumbling across absorbing museum exhibitions (on tattoos, rock ‘n’ roll photos, Hans Wegner chairs), farmers markets, Legoland, 10pm sunsets.

Plus, my favourite part: getting back my Danish-language skills (with a fair bit of pronunciation butchering), and spending quality time with my Danish family – gorgeous people who hosted me as an exchange student 25 years ago and warmly welcome me back into the family on every visit.

All in all, a superbly memorable trip. And now to writing up those notes…
